BHM 2011:
We had an incredibly successful event for BHM 2011:Malcolm X: Visits Abroad. A lecture by author of Malcolm X: Visits Abroad.
In October, in celebration of Black History Month, the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre jointly hosted a celebratory lecture of the African-American and global Civil Rights icon, Malcolm X, with the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Education Trust.
The lecture, held on October 20th, was delivered by noted historian and educationalist, Marika Sherwood, and featured material from Marika’s new book, Malcolm X: Visits Abroad April 1964 - February 1965. In this new publication, she focuses on Malcolm’s travels throughout Africa and Europe; and how Malcolm became greatly concerned with global inequality.
On December 3rd, 1964, Malcolm visited the University of Manchester and spoke at the Students’ Union, enthusing hundreds of students and staff with his calls for social equality and equality of opportunity for all. One of the audience members was Professor Emeritus, Louis Kushnick, who taught in American Studies and Sociology here, and founded the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre in 1999.
Marika’s lecture brought together a diverse audience of the University’s students and academics, local community activists, politicians and local historians to debate not only Malcolm X’s legacy but the state of modern race relations and civil rights, and how universities and communities can work together to ensure the gains of activists like him aren’t forgotten, and are continued.
Copies of Marika’s book are available to buy at the centre for £8.
