Exploring Our Roots
Exploring Our Roots was an oral history project in Manchester. It explored the local heritage of Manchester’s Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Chinese, African Caribbean and West African communities, acknowledging the contribution of local ethnic minority groups to the development of modern Manchester and the Northwest.
Led by project teacher Ann Hardy, young people from Manchester High Schools interviewed people about their lives and experiences in Britain . From the histories collected we created banners, books, posters, videos and teaching materials for use in community groups, schools, libraries and museums.
During the project we interviewed nearly 70 individuals. Click here to see a complete list of those we interviewed.
All material from the project is housed at the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre. A teaching pack and DVD based upon this project was created by David Cooke in 2007.
