In-school education outreach work, young people’s conferences and teacher training.
The Trust can offer:
Bespoke presentations and workshops for schools on black heroes, racial history and immigration:
Trust and Centre staff can provide presentations and workshops for classes, assemblies or conferences. Previous topics covered include an examination of the representation of Refugees and Asylum Seekers in the Press, Mary Seacole, Olaudah Equiano and the Abolition Movement. These are often run in collaboration with the Widening Participation Officer for Race at the University of Manchester. We experience a high demand for this service during Black History Month but we accept requests throughout the year.
Positive Identity Programmes:
The Trust’s Outreach Coordinator has worked with female Somali and Afghani students in after-school sessions and classes at Whalley Range High School for Girls in Manchester. The students developed poetry, stories and imagery which highlighted positive aspects of their countries of origin. The Somali project was funded by the MLA and run in conjunction with the Resource Centre. The MLA funded the production of a resource pack on Somali history, culture and traditions which is free to download and ideal for use with all students. Visit our Downloads page to print it in PDF format.
Training on using relevant resources for teaching about and for BME and Refugee communities:
This training often includes a visit to the Centre to see the Centre’s resources. As part of our commitment to working with teachers we regularly present to trainees teachers at the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University.
Conferences for young people and practitioners:
We have worked with the University of Manchester to deliver a yearly conference promoting Higher Education to BME Year 10's in Manchester - Your Future, Your Choice - since 2006. We plan to host a conference for A/AS Levels students presenting positive lectures on economic sustainability, the culture and media industries and political development in African countries in June 2009.
