Saturday 25th January marks Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival. Manchester will be filled with exciting celebrations, lantern and dragon parades, fireworks and craft workshops – and we have some exciting news of our own!
This Chinese New Year we are processing a newly received archive from ‘Crossing the Borders’ project, organised by Manchester’s Wai Yin Society.
The project, which was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, interviewed twenty members of the community including four male and sixteen female participants who came from Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Macau. The archive is made up of oral history interviews, portraits, artwork and a book which includes excerpts of the interviews.
While the archive is still very much in the process of the being archived and catalogued, we couldn’t be happier that the Wai Yin Society have shared it with us. 2020 is Year of the Rat, which in relation to yin and yang (阴阳) symbolises the beginning of a new day. Here’s to the beginning of a new partnership with Wai Yin and the beginning of a greater presence of Manchester’s Chinese community in our archive!
